Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 cups pretzel crumbs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil, for frying

For the Cheese Sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: In a shallow dish, place the flour. In another shallow dish, place the beaten eggs. In a third shallow dish, combine the pretzel crumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Coat the Chicken: Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour, then dip in the egg, and finally coat thoroughly with the pretzel crumb mixture.
  3. Fry the Chicken: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the coated chicken pieces in the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  4. Cook the Chicken: Fry the chicken for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet and place on a wire rack to drain excess oil.
  5. Prepare the Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Make the Sauce: Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Add the salt, pepper, and mustard. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Add Cheese: Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  8. Serve: Serve the pretzel chicken immediately with the cheese sauce for dipping.

Notes

For a lighter version, bake the chicken at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through. Serve with a side of steamed broccoli or a fresh salad.
